Check out this blog post, especially the comments. It reports that the Canadian government is actively seeking information about the use of  “No-Charge Licensed Software (typically referred to as Free and Open Source Software or FOSS and also applicable to freeware).”

It was not too long ago that I had to write to the webmaster of the Canada Revenue Agency to see if they’d consider including Firefox as one of their approved web browsers.  I didn’t receive a response, but others must have also written in, as it is now one of the choices.

One can hope.

Vote for your Federal Party/Leader/Candidate today.  Get out of the house and VOTE! As I said before, if you don’t vote, you have no right to complain about your government.  If you don’t know where you’re polling station is or what you need to bring, check here.  Make a choice and influence the direction our country takes.

So…

Thank you to the 59.1% of voters who turned out to vote for your favorite candidate.  Thank you for voting at all.  Its too bad that most thought that the Conservatives should deserve to ream our country for another term.  I hope that I’m wrong and that the majority knows best…

If a picture is worth 1000 words, then here are 2000.  Finally, it looks like the Canada that the rest of the world sees us as:

Feb 27 Snow

This was yesterday.

Feb 28 Snow

That’s out my window this morning.  We got another 10cm or so.

More, but not worthy of another post:

This would be what Macbros had referred to on his site.

Dell and Ubuntu in CanadaAwesome! I just got my e-flyer from Dell today and I saw a new offering on the ad.  They’re now bringing the Ubuntu operating system to Canada on some of their models! This is great news, as I have been contemplating a laptop purchase and it was going to have Linux on it.  Now, since I like Ubuntu anyways, I won’t have to install it myself.  And all of the machine’s capabilities will be used under Linux, supported by Dell.  Woo hoo!

Check it out:  HERE

Its been reported here and here as well.

This is so good!

poppy.jpgToday is Remembrance Day in Canada. As a sign of respect, I am going to take two minutes of silence at 11:00am, which should be about 3 minutes from the time that this post appears. For all who live in a country that respects their Veterans and War Dead on Nov 11, please join me.

Our National Holiday to celebrate our country’s inception in 1867 is July 1. It just happens to be that day today.Courtesy of http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Canada_flag_halifax_9_-04.JPG

UPDATE:

It turns out that the fireworks were quite good this year. Fredericton usually goes a bit cheap on the fireworks, but it seems that this year there were a few pennies left for them this year. They were fired off from Carleton park this year, and the view was nice. There was a reasonable variety and a few new ones that I’ve never seen before (one that looked like a gyroscope, for example). After a nice show, the “signal went out” and a blitz of different forms of fireworks were shot off from in front of the lighthouse on the south side of the river. Nice finale.

Sorry – no pictures.  Perhaps Fredericton Cabbie might have a few…

So today marks the “official” 139th birthday of Canada, the country I am proud to live in.  Happy Canada Day!
