Graceful Shutdown

Have you ever had your PC lock up so that you couldn’t shut it down with the mouse or by the usual methods? There’s a command that is a carryover from days gone by that computers still understand. And, only the most unresponsive PC’s should respond to this command.

Here’s the trick:

hold down the ALT and the SysRq buttons at the same time. SysRq shares PrintScrn. While holding down ALT+SysRq, type the letters R, E, I, S, U, B in order. This should release the keyboard from the operating system to a basic BIOS stored command set and allow you to unmount the drives and reboot the machine.

This usually will work. Good luck.
