I saw this story on the Yahoo! home page today and just had to share. It seems that the mayor has declared that you can’t die in his town. Read it. The absurd part is why he had to.

Today is Remembrance Day in Canada. As a sign of respect, I am going to take two minutes of silence at 11:00am, which should be about 3 minutes from the time that this post appears. For all who live in a country that respects their Veterans and War Dead on Nov 11, please join me.
Not only is today the one that I picked to come out and see what the world was like many years ago. Today is the International Day of Peace. If you’re fighting with someone on any type of scale, consider taking this day to stop, if you will. Watch the news. Join a peace rally (there will be many today). Or, just be nice for the day. What a great gift that would be.
Oh, and happy birthday not only to me, but to Stephen King, Bill Murray, Riki Lake, and Faith Hill.
I wasn’t there but I remember. Even on television, it was horrifying. It’d be about an hour from now if it was that day.
After I saw that my “Archivist” plugin pulled a post from Dec 25, 2005, I remembered an article that I just read on Hans Reiser at Wired. Interviewer Joshua Davis interviewed Hans Reiser from Prison and wrote the interview. The interview got Slashdotted.
If I hadn’t tried Reiserfs (at version 2.9 or 3.0) and saw how much faster my desktop worked with this “unstable” filesystem keeping the pidgeons in their holes, I may not have paid much attention to the whole sensational drama surrounding this true Linux geek. So, where is Nina Reiser? Hubby’s in jail, arraigned on murder for a body that can’t be found. I think that she’s in Russia and he’s going to rot for nothing.
So, what does this mean for Reiser4? Is there going to be a Reiser4? Are the traditional supporters going to return? Suse? Hello? Of all the filesystems I have tried on the same kernel of Linux, Reiser had the best speed (especially v4), followed by EXT3 and then XFS/JFS. Microsoft’s filesystems didn’t keep up at all, running at the same speed as EXT2.
Surely, something good will come of this whole mess.
Our National Holiday to celebrate our country’s inception in 1867 is July 1. It just happens to be that day today.
UPDATE:
It turns out that the fireworks were quite good this year. Fredericton usually goes a bit cheap on the fireworks, but it seems that this year there were a few pennies left for them this year. They were fired off from Carleton park this year, and the view was nice. There was a reasonable variety and a few new ones that I’ve never seen before (one that looked like a gyroscope, for example). After a nice show, the “signal went out” and a blitz of different forms of fireworks were shot off from in front of the lighthouse on the south side of the river. Nice finale.
Sorry - no pictures. Perhaps Fredericton Cabbie might have a few…
A few people who know me have noticed that I’ve made myself “available” on a venue that, frankly, I didn’t think that I’d be into. I have become a member of the Facebook community. This was not really because I want to spend my whole day “poking” friends, although I might do it once in a while. Its fun to poke a friend once in a while. Heh heh.
The reason that I joined is bacause its the new social venue for what may become an actual Linux Users Group. I don’t know for sure where things are going to go, as there are only 7 members so far, and only two of us have actually posted anything on the wall (me being one, and I know nothing about Facebook at all). But for those who are in the Fredericton area who might want to know more about Linux (or GNU/Linux) or who want to meet up with others who are into the alternative operating system, please check out the Facebook group Linux Fredericton. We will welcome anyone who wants to get involved and help spread the Linux love.
