School bus

Remember when you went to school? If you live in an industrialized country then you probably went to school on a bus if you lived any distance away. I remember when I was in my first year of school. I rode the bus for a few months – I think that it may have been until the winter was over. The only thing that really stopped me was a bully who decided to pick on me. Rather than wait for the bus and be harassed, I hoofed it home and have since.

Our children live a bit too far to expect them to walk to their school now.  Ange and I walk about 3/4 of the way and it takes us nearly an hour round trip and we walk quickly.

This morning, the bus stopped for our children at the end of our driveway, picked them up, and took off – about 15 metres (50 feet) – and stopped. Caleb’s friend, who had come from next door to get on the bus with him, had noticed antifreeze dripping from the engine and had told the driver. o, she stopped the bus and put out the requisite trouble signs. Another bus was brought right away and the children were whisked off to school after a short 15 minute delay. Kudos to the school system and the bus garage for their swift action.

I remember (vaguely) that we had a break down in the school bus when going on a field trip. I also remember that it was quite a bit more than 15 minutes. For the first little while, it was kind of exciting because it was a break from the routine. After a while, it got a little tired, but we were on our way within a few hours with no harm done.

Remember, its the small things…

I rode the bus for 9.5 years, from Kindergarten to halfway through 9th grade. Then we moved, and I transferred to a school 10 blocks away. I could walk it in 10-15 min, except when I walked with Deadria. It would take us sometimes up to 45 min to meander over the hill. Yes, it was uphill both ways. LOL I can remember on the bus in the early fall, and late spring, when it would be all humidly hot, and of course we had no a/c on the buses back then. Most of us live on dirt roads too, so we had all that road dust coming billowing in through the open windows every time we stopped. It would be so hot and humid and every one would be sweating, which means everyone ended up all stuck to the seats. Man, thinking back, that really sucked just as much as I thought it did at the time. :-)

I grew up in a military family, so school was a 2-3 minute walk.

When I was to young to go by myself Mom walked me. It’s funny that I can actually still remember that. I miss those days.

Later on in years, living on Base in Petawawa, ON and Chatham, NB and so on, the schools were very close to home. I actually liked the walking to and from school. I was able to play on the way there or back home. Being on time of course. :P

When I got to Lincoln, NB it was Bus time and it was over crowded and sometime I had to stand up. Laws have changed since, thank God!

I didn’t like the idea, and neither did my folks, so I got a drive in to school with my folks because Dad had to go to work on Base anyway and it was on the way.

Remember hating to go to school while you were going? Now I wish I was still there because life is so different when you leave and have to get into the working life.

Man, I wish I could go back in time. There are so many things that I would do, knowing what I know now.

You people are depressing me! All these repressed memories coming back, lol.

I only rode the bus in the 7th grade because it was too far. It was a 7th grade only school and the only place in the whole city you could go to 7th grade. How strange is that? 5 miles, so I never had time in the morning to walk, but I hated the bus enough to walk home most days. Just finding the right bus in the afternoon was chaos.
