I’ve seen much faster growth in gardens before. Mine’s limping along slowly, though. I thought that I’d post an update to my previous post about planting a garden, about 4-1/2 weeks ago. It seems that for over 2 weeks since that date, we’ve had the risk of frost nearly every night – in June! It must have been more than a risk because some of the seeds didn’t grow at all. I attribute that to the frost, as I hadn’t seen any birds feasting on the garden.
I took this picture yesterday before the rain came yet again. With all of the rain that we’ve been having, there is no shortage of hydration. Now, if it would only be sunny for a few days, perhaps the poor plants would grow. My rain barrels have been full for well over a week and I’ve not needed to use anything from them. I sure wish that I could share with some places around the globe where there isn’t water.
So, the waxed beans, squash, pumpkin, zucchini, and herbs didn’t make it, so I replanted them. They seem to be growing now. The carrots are poking out of the ground with their first feathery tops and the red onions are, for the most part, growing as they should. As you can see, the tomato and pepper transplants are thriving, as are the second plantings of beans, despite the slugs that plague this area. The peas are looking healthy but small. They’ll come along. So have the weeds, as you can likely see.
The replants are showing already, so they warmer weather has done its trick. I am hopeful that everything grows as well as the lettuce seems to have been. We’ve already had some baby greens from what I thinned out of the row. Here’s hoping.

WOW! You need to weed that garden! LOL
You should be hoeing the lanes too, especially with all the rain.
The other seeds probably all rotted from all this rain we’ve been getting.
Other than that, it’s looking good Corey!
It may have been a little soon for planting pumpkins. At least it’s too early for that around these parts. I wouldn’t plant pumpkins here until about August, late August. Of course, our summers are so hot and last soooo long, and you need a little cooler weather for pumpkins. That’s about an October harvest here.
I want some tomatoes.
What happened after you re-palnted the herbs? I hope now they all have grown well.
@MacBros – weeds.shmeed!that’s not much.are you sure you’re not looking at the onions?
@mel – our summer is so unpredictable in length – usually short – that it sometimes takes a while for pumpkins to grow. If they actually take off, I’ll be giving them away anyhow. I don’t have room to store a lot.
I’ve learned to be more patient with the garden. Once I got that down, you’ll be surprised when things start popping up overnight or just exploding with growth when the right weather comes about.
Yesterday I found two watermelons in my garden I hadn’t even noticed before, they’re already twice the size of a softball.
Sweet! If it would stop raining long enough for the sun to shine, I am sure that the garden would explode. There’s hope yet. My replanted spinach is already poking through after just a few days.
You can send that rain my way if you want. My water bill was about double it’s usual cost due to no rain and me having to water the garden and grass just so it doesn’t totally die on me.
Congratulations on all the new growth! I don’t exactly have a green thumb so at this point I just try to take care of one plant at a time, but I would definitely like to improve my skills.
I’m not far ahead of you, really…but the weeds are!
