I haven’t been too happy lately with the speed that the pages come up on this site.  I’m going to see if I can work with my web host and zero in on what might be causing less than stellar performance on a quad core server.  I am sure that it is database related, as the pages load quite quickly if I disable all my plugins.  At least one of them is definitely causing some extra load and I don’t like it.  That’s part of the reason that there’s not been a ton of content added recently.  I just don’t want to wait for the page loads while on break at work, for example.  For the 3 people that still read this stuff, I apologise.  Of course, if you read this in a feed or via email subscription, this is not an issue.

You could always install WP Super Cache:
    http://ocaoimh.ie/wp-super-cache/

    That’ll decrease the pageload times.

Chances are that you are sharing the same server with a few hundred other sites. That’ll bog the site down when using the SQL Database, plus PHP Calls because the CPU usage gets bogged down as the other sites are using the PHP and Database more too. That’s why it loads faster when you turn off the plug-ins. The more PHP server calls and Database stuff, the slower it will be on a shared server.

I’m glad I know somebody on the inside at my Hosting provider who got me on a sweeeeeet server. :D

That’s not likely the whole story. There are just over 100 domains on this server, but most of them (and I mean at least 90) are really just a simple static home page and of the rest, there are about 4 sites that are developed to any extent. I’ve already visited all of them. Most large hosts have over 1000 sites on one server and they don’t come to their knees. This is just a bad configuration issue, either on my site (plugins) or on the server (configuration).

I hope you resolve the problem Corey! I, too have noticed that the site doesn’t load super fast but it is not super slow either and I am always patient. That is why Mozilla invented Tabbed panes so you could load more than one page at a time! But I hear your frusteration. When you are paying for a service you want to ensure that it is zippy and up to your expectations and needs so lets hope that this problem gets resolved in an intelligent and thoughtful fashion.

Just wait, Corey, until I finish my blogging application. No SQL at all, no plugins, no server-side administration whatsoever. Just make sure you send me your required features by email. :-)

I can’t say that I haven’t been intrigued by what you have been cooking. In the meantime, I’m going to try and tame WP while I have it.

I’ve noticed that its the main page that is slowest. Individual pages aren’t nearly as lethargic to display. They’re not up to the speed of hari’s site, though, which I’d like to see. The datacenter is in Texas, along with a zillion others, so its not an outgoing bandwidth issue, as there are many sites located there (Dallas, mostly), due to the immense data throughput capabilities there.

One thing that usually helps or can help is to disable any DNS lookups within your blog, plugins, other applications. Reverse DNS lookups can slow responses down when incorporated into sites and servers.

Just to also mention, I manually timed your site to load after it had already loaded and it took around 8 seconds on my connection at home. Another Wordpress site I tested was Ray’s and it took around 2 seconds. So not terrible being 8 seconds but something definitely is causing a slight delay.

I’ll look into that, Drew. Perhaps I can just rewrite the plugin a bit by commenting out that code, if I recognize it. BTW, if I turn off all plugins, the pages load almost instantly. Now, my experience is both at home on out 1.5MB DSL connection, through a Speedstream 6520 gateway (ethernet - wireless is turned off), and also at work, using our homebrewed version of IE6 on the company LAN.
