I’ve returned from the road.  It was a nice (but too short) break from the ordinary.  I may post pictures in the gallery.  I’ve been trying to get a new board and processor working, so I’ve not been on my computer much yet.  Wish me luck with that thing.

I think your board works fine under linux according to this link:

    http://www.phoronix.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-2050.html

It was the ethernet that wasn’t working correct? (And you have two ethernets on your board which means you only have to get one working for basic tasks!)

I’m still struggling to get my new system online but it is too noisy for now!

I saw that post. too bad they didn’t post more than “its fully compatible”. That’s about as useful as…

I got the ethernet recognized. The NForce chpset worked but I haven’t tested the Marvell Gigabit one. I assume that it would, since some distros’ installer asked for me to choose one. I picked the one with the cable plugged into it. Once I get it all figured out, I might use the Marvell, as a gigabit NIC should be able to handle more throughput, which might be good for bittorrent, etc (gotta share those Linux ISOs).

The showstopper seems to be the IDE interface. Its crapping out, causing problems with basic usage and installation. I think that I’ve narrowed it down to a problem with the way the newer kernels handle SATA/IDE boards. But, I did have problems trying Windows XP, as well. Perhaps it just doesn’t like my LG DVD burner. I wish that I could borrow some SATA drives to see if that is the problem before investing in new equipment.

Oh this is strange. If its in both Windows XP and Linux my guess its the equipment that is the problem. Of course that is just a guess. You installed ubuntu from the burner, correct so this is very puzzling indeed? Once you get this all figured out you will have nintendo 64 emulation in the palm of your hand! I’m playing GoldenEye 007 as we speak! Who says the oldies aren’t great?

Oh how much are you overclocking your cpu? I hear the Barton 2500+ Overclocks wonderfully!

I’m clocking it at the speed its rated for (1.83Ghz@166FSBx11)until I get an OS that will work. Apparently Puppy and PCLinuxOS can run from the Live CD without incident, so I may experiment with them on the drive that now houses Arch. It was running at 2.2Ghz for a bit, as the auto setting picked 200mhz, which caused it to be recognized as a 3200+. The temperatures seemed okay, so if I can get the IDE issue taken care of, I’ll probably try to clock it back up to that speed.

Awesome!! This basically means our machines are now equivalent! * Gulp * Which means you can now run Project 64 in WINE using the latest Glide64 “Napalm” drivers released as of this year, April 2008. I tried them out and they are working perfectly! It fixed some transparency issues I was having in GoldenEye 007 allowing me to see all the stupid little “restroom” signs spread throughout the building complex. So thank you Wine 1.1 team for doing your best to making running Windows fun…while not actually being in Windows! And oh yes, thank you Glide64 team too. hehe

So, I’ve removed the board from the case and replaced with my P-III board. Every thing’s working. I’d say that this is possibly an issue with the IDE cables and that board.

Oh no. So you are back to the old setup? Does this both mean we now have new computers that we are not using due to excessive noise or stability issues? Why is it so difficult to make progress when it comes to new computers!!!?
