Fried Noodles - click the image to make it biggerI don’t know about you, but I’m a big noodle fan.  I don’t limit myself to pasta.  I also like Chinese noodles - quite a bit, actually.  I’ve gotten a bit of a craving for some lo mien or fried noodles today.  Its too bad that I’m not at home, as I cannot make them here at work. :D

If you like quick, cheap and tasty food, but you don’t want to work too hard at preparing it, try this fried noodle idea.  I like it (sorta made it up myself).

I start with chinese noodles from the Dollerama (one of the best and most stocked dollar stores here in Canada).  I get a brick of noodles that is equivalent to about 8 Mr. Noodles packages for a dollar.

The ingredients:

  • chinese noodles
  • 1 tbsp oil (vegetable or peanut)
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp oyster flavor sauce
  • shot hot sauce (your choice - I prefer “Billy Bob’s” from Dollerama)
  • 1 clove garlic (optional)
  • sliver ginger root (ginger powder tastes like crap) (optional)
  • green onion (optional)
  • 1 tsp brown sugar (optional)

Cook the noodles, according to the package or to taste.  Drain the noodles.  In a hot frying pan or Wok, toss noodles with oil and soy sauce.  Fry for 1-2 minutes.  If you’re in a hurry, you’re done.  if you want tastier, add the oyster sauce and hot sauce.  You won’t be sorry.  For a different flavor, add to this the rest of the ingredients on the list.  Smash the garlic with the side of a chopping knife, like a French knife or a Chinese vegetable cleaver (my preferred knife to avoid tendonitis and carpal tunnel) and chop it up to your taste.  You can do the same with the ginger.  Sliver the onion diagonally and either toss in or garnish with it.

If you choose to add the ginger, add the sugar as well.  They compliment each other well.  Enjoy! Pictured is the dish made with shredded carrot and smoked pork loin.  The sweet carrots complement the fiery zip of the ginger.

Looks tasty. But since it’s not vegetarian, I’ll pass that one. :)

    But I also like noodles.

You could leave out the Oyster sauce (and the pork, if you’re referring to the picture) in yours, hari. :) Substituting Teryaki would be interesting. Mushrooms would be good, too.

I’m going to have to try this recipe out sometime! The problem is I am a klutz when it comes to culinary improvistory abilities and I would need a manual with technical pictures in order to figure out how to add the carrots and pork loin. Hmmm. Could I really eat pork? Those poor cute pigs! Maybe I’ll go for the mushrooms. :-)

Perhaps I’ll expand this with a pictorial guide. Its quick and easy. You don’t have to use meat in this one, Devin. But, if you want to, you could use a near brainless animal like a chicken. Or, use tofu, or egg.

I probably could figure it out with a little common sense but even if I couldn’t I’m sure consulting you in person/chatserver/phone would be sufficient! After all, how hard can it be? (Wait for the punchline!)

Billy Bob’s is awesome! Its almost drinkable in its tastiness. :D

I’m not drinking it straight from the bottle! Instead I will opt for the hotter stuff in your fridge that if you put 1/1000 of a drop it spoils the whole recipe! Hell that would be lethal if you took it all at once.

Well I got up at 9 am this morning with the ambition of collecting the ingredients I needed to embark on Corey’s culinary delight! But woe, despite the fact that the Dollerama is billed as “one of the best and most stocked dollar stores here in Canada” the one situated on the Smythe Canadian Tire shopping plaza is bringing the franchise name down as no block of Noodles or Billy Bob’s hot sauce was to be found!

Dejected, I walked to the Sobeys and failed to find any of these two key staples as well so I decided to put the project on a backburner. Then I thought to myself - “Why do I have to be so lame? Have I forgot the art of improvisation or is my nerdy black/white 0/1 computer science mind taking over.” I decided to expand my horizons and find alternate ingredients. Here they are Corey.

    • Farkay Chinese Style Wun Tun Noodles
    • Golden Dragon Wok Oil with Garlic & Ginger
    • Kikkoman Naturally Brewed Soy Sauce
    • Golden Dragon Oyster Sauce
    • A Taste of Thai Garlic Chili Pepper Sauce
    • 1 Clove Garlic
    • Fresh Ginger Root (Not powdered!)
    • 1 Kg Golden Yellow Brown Sugar (What will I do with the rest?)
    • Sobeys Complement Vegetable Medley Broccoli, Cauliflower, and Carrots
    • 1 Red Pepper
    • 0.241 kg shrinkwrapped boneless skinless chicken

As pathetic as it is this is one of the first times I have bought chicken that is not already precooked and in the chicken burger fillet form! hahaah

Now I don’t have a deep stir frying pan so hopefully the normal pan I use to fry me eggs in will suffice! I’ll tell you how it turns out! On a humorous note I had to find a kind Sobeys employee to help me track down the Soy Sauce and Oyster sauce and it took him about 7 minutes to locate it because those sauces were in a separate aisle from all the other sauces! Go figure.

On an unrelated note I also bought some bananas, plums, oranges, yogurt, and Grain Shop Honey Almond Multigrain Cereal but I’m not planning on adding any of these ingredients!

P.S. (Edit after I made the initial submission) Corey is there anyway I can make an unordered html list on your blog? I tried it using the standard UL and LI html tags but it failed so I just inserted those special html bullet symbols. You don’t want your users having too much power! What’s next? Soon they will be inserting sneaky javascript and unwanted pictures! But I thought a simple unordered list was a pretty humble thing to desire!

Awesome! That looks like a grand collection of ingredients! Are you sure that you don’t want to include a banana in that? :D. I’ll have to check into what tags are allowed. I used to have the list on my comment form. I’ll look into restoring it, perhaps as a <div> on the side.

I’ll pass on the bananas! Hey all those ingredients including the bananas only set me back $40.00. Seems pretty reasonable to me for semi healthy food. Yes allow me to write my rudimentary 1990s simple html code! No Javascript will be attempted! hahahh

instead of the soy sauce try to sip some jalapenos in fish sauce for a week and use that :D you wont regret the taste if you like spicy

I knew that there’d be a use for those jalapenos that I stuck in my freezer!
