I will now!
Has anyone who has upgraded to WP 2.3 noticed what the default blogroll is? It seems that the whiners on the forums have won and got the authors’ addresses removed from the default. Now, there are helpful links to wordpress sites, like the codex. This is a good move, I think, but I wish that it wasn’t forced to become in the manner that it did. I honestly don’t think that the originals had ever thought of all the SE “juice” they’d get from being linked to all the blogs out there running WP being run by people who are too lazy to uncheck the links in the blogroll (I left a few in because I read those blogs - don’t worry, folks, you’ll be back in, likely this weekend, when I add that table back to my database).
On the other hand, would you still read my stuff if I wrote daily a one line post which linked to somebody else?
I’ve yet to upgrade, but I need to. Keep forgetting to. Any big issues I should look out for?
Yes, there are a few, but they’re not insurmountable. be sure that you do a full database back up so that if it borks, you can replace it. Back up your home directory as well. After the trouble that my hosts server went through (and, as a result, I went through), I decided that doing back ups their way wasn’t good enough and I do a back up of my home directory when it significantly changes, and, for sure, my wp-content directory. I’ve also exported the posts/comments/categories with the Wordpress export feature. I had an issue with an upgrade with a nightly build and it was so annoying that I decided to install WP fresh and start again with the xml file generated by the Wordpress export tool.
By the way, if your host has a 2MB limit on the upload, like mine seems to, then you’ll have to cut the file into pieces, which you can do. But, if you do, your posts will have different IDs. Mine now do. Its better to back up the database, really. I didn’t want to muck with mine and figure out which of the 22 tables I should keep. I am down to 14 now, I think, which doesn’t leave me without much, except UTW and my tags, which I may still be able to get back some how.
Well, I didn’t notice any changes to the blog roll…
The blogroll usually doesn’t change when you upgrade, does it?
No, it usually doesn’t. This time, though, I didn’t upgrade. I replaced it. This is a good opportunity to go through my blogroll and see which links I really should keep. As you may notice, there’s not much in mine right now.
Thanks mrcorey, antoher night passed and I forgot to update again. Argh.
