Today, I took my bicycle to work. Its, by far, the longest ride that I’ve done on any kind of a time schedule in quite a long time. Its about 5 km from where I live to where work is – all up hill! Its going to be one fun ride back home, as the only hill that I’ll be up against will be the little rise onto the bridge and the block leading up to my house.
But, wow, am I still out of shape! I’ve been pedaling all over the place and it still shows that I’ve got many muscles that haven’t had any real workout for a long time. Now, I am about 12 years older than the last time that I rode my bike seriously, so I’ll have that against me. But, I used to climb Regent St in one of the higher gears, so I don’t see why I can’t get back to doing that. I used to bike everywhere in temperatures between -25°C and +35°C. So, today’s sweaty grind 1/2 way up the hill should become part of the past soon – I hope. These old bones are sure tired compared to 12 years ago, though.
Way to get back in shape Corey! I would like to ride a bike as well but my greatest obstacle (asides from purchasing a bike) are my weak knees…especially my right one that I had surgery on. It is still is sore from time to time!
So congratulations on using your own horsepower to get to work! Surely there is something political or “unwelcome guests” related on this topic since it deals with taking a step backwards to a more energy sufficient reality?
I think it’s great that you’re doing this, Corey! Give it another week or two and you’ll be feeling really good.
But be honest, if you still had a car that was working, would you be climbing upon your silver stallion?
No, Skye. I doubt that I would (at least now in my financially-strapped life). I’ve wanted to get back into a decently fit lifestyle for some time, as my overall mobility and comfort was degrading, due to my relative inactivity. I feel tons better now. And, now that I have a bike again, I don’t have to put off buying one!
LOL! If you don’t bother to brake on the way down that hill you won’t have to worry about the ramp on to the bridge and the small hill by your place. Frooooooommmm!
Keep it up.Fortune favours the bold, but it rewards the persistent. Can’t remember who said that but possibly the progeny of William Shakepeare.
I haven’t been on a bike for 20 years. I used to lend it to my girlfriend, but she ended up pedalling it all over town. Not sure how long it takes you when the wind is blowing, but a good pumping session can be quite rewarding.
One caveat though, rumour has it that the police in the city of the stately elms have no real crime to deal with (except for enforcing no bikes in the drive-thru lane), and are on the look out or cyclists who speed, and fail to signal. The ensuing tickets give meaning and purpose to their lives. Don’t enrich the coffers of the city!
“rumour has it that the police in the city of the stately elms have no real crime to deal with”
Actually, there seems to be a bunch of asswipes who cruise around and beat people up (in swarms), so its not as fun right now. Time to carry your favorite Louisville Slugger “to the game”
