If you don’t already know, I use Bad Behavior as my spam repellent on this site.  It seems to work alright.  I did notice, though, that lately, I can’t seem to comment from work or from links, a text browser I sometimes use from the command prompt under Linux.

If you’ve been bitten by the guard dog, I’d like to know.  Please email me if you’ve tried to comment and gotten blocked with a “you’re not allowed” message, or the such.  Bad Behavior gives you a “key” to refer to the spot in the sql table that holds BB (like that’s easy to parse!) so that I can help get you out, so to speak.

My email address is in the sidebar, in the footer of every page, and on the “about me” page.

I stopped using anything but the Akismet filter because of a similar problem. I’m a minority, I think, because I have all the time in the world to review stuff filtered out as spam.

I dropped everything too and just use Akismet and WP-Ban. I even striped my Ban list too.

But doesn’t BB not even let you into the site? I know when I tried it, it blocked me from my own site a couple of times, and I trashed that right away.

If it does, how are people going to read this? :p

You can get to the site. You just can’t write anything on it if you’re “banned”. I don’t like the idea of Akismet at all. I don’t want to rely on somebody else’s server to work on my site. If the filter isn’t local, I don’t want it.

BTW, I’ve been running BB for over a year and its doing just fine. Even if you get to the “you’re a bad guy” page, you can still get things resolved, either through the author of the software or by emailing me, with the link provided on the page.

If you don’t want to bother, then your comment must not have been important enough, right?

The way I look at it is that this is a personal site. I’m not in it to make money, which is why I don’t waste my time plastering advertisements all over it (it would take me forever to make anything at all - I tried Clicksor for a YEAR before I got $20 worth of revenue). My thoughts are mine. If someone comments on them, that’s great! We all like to be validated. But, I also don’t want to do more than the basic “housecleaning” to keep out the spam bots. This means that a valued correspondent can’t comment on my site, as her IP address is in a range of “evil” ones. But, I’d rather exchange email with her than allow in 3200 spams a week, which is what’s been currently blocked.

Touché (and no I can’t make that accent mark ed. but I can for you!) so you have to wing it. So, the thing is, you don’t like the 3rd party server thing. I can respect that — I didn’t like it either at first.

I’ve read good things about “Bad Behavior” as well as “Worst Offenders”. I believe WO deletes spam automatically.

They must have made changes to it then. When I tried it I got banned from my own site when I wrote a very lengthy post.

That was the day I took the plug-in off. I wrote this nice long post and when I went to submit it, the whole thing was lost. What a piss of that was.

I’m not int o blogging for money either, but the ads WILL pay for the hosting. Clicksor was a joke, I took my $20 and closed the account.

At least with AsSense you actually get some good revenue from it. I’ve got more in 1 week with AsSense than I did in 6 months with Clicksor.

I remember that incident. Hitting the “back” button would have helped, though. There are some cleverly written bots out there, though. Here’s a tip that will cut down your site’s bandwidth usage a lot. BAN THIS IP ADDRESS: 38 dot 98 dot 120 dot 78

You will thank me. That IP was the source of about 200-300MB per month of bandwidth. After researching the accesses, I found it was all blog spam attempts. Banning the IP has reduced my bandwidth usage by that much.

As it is now, over 2/3 of my traffic is not visitors, so I wanted to change the ratio as much as I could. I would be naïve to think that its all RSS traffic.

Backspace didn’t work. Trust me, I tried that.

    Thanks for the IP though.
    Blocked.
