In fact, the uploader for Photopress which was broken for several months (I've been uploading with ftp and adding with the manage tool) and now works again. So, something behind the scenes has been changed. If you want some of the new features (like a static front page, or some of the newer, faster cacheing), then 2.1 is for you. If not, then this feature upgrade is not necessary. There are long term plans for both. The issue that you have with the links and blogroll are somewhat addressed in 2.2. Its more clear and there are a few easier ways to manage links, posts, pages, and categories. There is also a fix for your problem. The new php call is the wp_bookmarks tag.
