The new final release of Wordpress 2.1 seems to be received with mixed response. I’ve been running for months now, from Alpha3 onward. I’ve been impressed, for the most part, even with the “not for public consumption” alpha builds that I’ve been running.
First things first. Many will find that their blogroll is gone when they upgrade. Shame on all who didn’t back up their database before upgrading, because now you’re stuck with your decision. You could have stayed with 2.0.7 (BTW, there’s work on 2.0.8 - squashing more bugs, etc). Why not mosey along over to the Wordpress codex page on the wp_list_bookmarks call, as its a replacement for wp_list_cats or wp_list_categories. So, go forth and evolve, ye eager beavers.
My real loss was a plugin that I liked quite a bit until I upgraded my blog to 2.1 a few months ago. I’m not a plugin author, and, frankly, I can’t make a theme without a guideline. This one is based on another, as the footer will show. I know that I’ve modified it heavily, but the structure is essentially intact. I only had trouble with one plugin - Maxpower’s Digital Fingerprint. The plugin functioned all along, but the admin page would not display. Along comes 2.1 final and the admin page appears, miraculously! So, it was an issue with Wordpress - not the plugin.
I know that I promised a review of 2.1 a while ago, but i got sidetracked. Interestingly enough, I have a few screenshots of the various admin differences but never actually came up with the words. Of course, its the content that brings ‘em back, so that wasn’t enough. Perhaps I should get to that. ‘ll try to make it this weekend’s project to put this review together.
now to see if the nightly build that I downloaded is version 2.2……
I didn’t have any issues with my blogroll. Except for a plug-in that would display the links favicon in my cache. It was no big deal ditching that thing. But my Database was still intact and all my blogroll links were still unharmed.
My upgrade was slick and I didn’t have any real problems.
It did however, encourage me to update all my plug-ins though.
