Don’t do this. You’re not supposed to.
I came home from the market to see what it felt like to not use the signal lights on my car. There’s a right turn, a left, a right, another left, and another right. Finally, a right brings me to my driveway. I didn’t meet traffic, so I went by the “if a tree falls in the woods…” theory.
I must say that this is one of the more difficult things that I have done in the car. After years of witnessing people in this driving-inept town doing just that, I found it extremely difficult to not use my turn signals. How do you do that??? I just don’t get it.
Do you use the turn signals all the time like I do? Do you use them part of the time? Or, are you trying to fit in here and use them so rarely that they seize up?
Heh. I used them pulling out of my driveway back at the folks place.
If you saw what my folks driveway looked like and what you were pulling out into, you would think, “WTF are you signaling for? There’s no real road here!”
Just a unconscious thing I guess you do after a few years of driving the right way.
At least signals have a use where you live! I’m in the Philippines and although I use my signals out of sheer habit, most people do not. In fact, many put a right turn signal on when they mean to turn left and vice versa. It’s as if they never learned what they meant.
About the only lights used are the headlights at night and the brake lights, but only because they’re automatic!
You have a point, RT. That’s too bad that there are a lot of places in the world where what I’m griping about would be considered a good situation. I just don’t get how everyone survives through it. I’ve often complained about a particular street (Regent St) where I used to live in which I could see from my apartment window the traffic. In my observations, I saw many drivers switch lanes without looking to see if there was room or even signaling to anyone else that they were going to move over. That’s just asking to get smucked, in my opinion. Are there a lot of accidents in your town? Or, does this apparent anarchy on the road seem to sort itself out?
I ALWAYS use my turn signals and it pisses me off royally when others do not. I’ve been known to yell things out the window at people…
Diane, if you do that up here in New Brunswick, the cold air will turn your Headlights On.
Ba-dum Ba-dum! Tssss!
Amazingly enough, the traffic collisions here are very rare and very minor when they do occur. The driving speeds in the city never exceed 24 mph/40 kph. There’s just too much traffic to go any faster. The roads weren’t designed to handle the traffic we have now and there’s no way to expand them.
The fastest speed I’ve seen here is 62 mph/100 kph and that’s on the Northern Luzon Expressway.
That really leads to a philosophical discussion about vehicle speed, now doesn’t it? I won’t say how fast that I’ve been able to drive on Route 7 (despite the photographic evidence).
