So, I decided, before putting it away for a while in the closet (until I find a place to set it up), to try getting a GUI to work on the UltraSparc. So, what to try? What to try? The whole idea of compiling source code for days just come up against a barrier did not taste too good. Reading the 2+inches thick of Sun manuals didn’t taste too good either. So, I tried once more to do the Debian thing. After all, it was with Debian that I first got Linux installed on my PC those years ago (thanks for the help and all the cheerleading, Devin).
I chose to do the Netinstall image, which was about 100 megs, as opposed to a whole CD. i always like doing it this way, as the programs are the freshest this way, and you control what goes on the machine. Also, if it works, then you know that you got your internet connection up as well. Bonus.
So, the short story is that this old fellow seems to have a screen resembling one like many others out there now, like Windows machines, and most Linux boxes (used at home). So, now that I know this can be done, its time to set up the webserver, PHP, MySql, etc and start developing some Wordpress themes on my own machine. Woo!
For those who want a more detailed rendition of my installation experience, wait for the page to appear in the sidebar (will be annoucing it when its written, as well). Oh, and in case its not already apparent from my previous announcements like this one, I am writing this post from the Sparc right now.
I tip my hat to you, Corey for perserving and getting the job done! You are giving me the motivation to install debian on my new AMD64 which is just a PC!!! The problem is that the network card is not recognized and I will have to compile the kernel before I can even connect to the net…unless I throw in the towel and buy a PCI ethernet card. And the sound won’t be recongized either. Lets just say that working with onboard video and ethernet can be a pain when using a relatively new ASUS hardware board!
The struggle continues! Long live Debian! Long live Linux!
And by the way! My risc nakenchat server was very honoured that you telneted in on your risc machine! The riscs finally got to deal with each other and make fun of those ackward Cisc machines! Muhahahaha!!!
After my landlord installs an electrical outlet in the “big closet/spare room” and paints, I plan to get a desk set up int here and it will live! Until then, it stays in my freshly-organized and scrubbed storage room, with the knowledge that it can carry the tux with sun on his belly logo with pride. Then, I can install Perl/Tk and get Rivenfox working.
Wow, a big closet/spare room! I used to sleep in one of those when I lived in Flagstaff, Arizona! Can’t wait to see it up and running with Perl/Tk and rivenfox!
The geek talk is way over my head, but just want to get my vote in. I like the 2-column set up and the colors…DON’T CHANGE THEM…pleaaaase. I especially like how the individual comments are different colors, and the first post is different color from the older ones.
I like the colors too, but they really don’t feel like me…yet. I’ve had this theme loaded (tell you a secret – I’ve got about 10 that I can switch to right away) for about 3 or 4 months, since it was written. It still doesn’t seem quite right using someone else’s theme when I am fully capable of writing one of my own. I think the key is to reduce the clutter in the sidebar. Archives should be on a page, instead of like a badge, showing how long you’ve been blogging. I mean, c’mon. I’ve been doing it since Google bought Blogger. I’ve nothing to show there (although you should see some of my posts. LOL! What a Wetodd!). A “recent posts” section has little place on a page that has 10 or so in the body of the page. I’m also a bit up in the air about the whole blogroll/links thing too. Your sidebar is much neater because you don’t have a lot of clutter, for example. I’m still partial to the two sidebars beside each other, too. Who knows…
BTW, the comment thing is a great plugin that I can put in any template I want.
And, the little room has been painted today! Electrical outlet next!
Wow, that was quick! Good for you!
To be honest, I hated the two sidebar thing…lol. It was too busy.
I was considering getting rid of my archives. I almost never look at them, and when I notice in my stats that someone has visited one right after the other of them, it kinda feels like they’re looking through my diary…like my privacy has been invaded. I guess that’s the risk I take when I write personal stuff. So, anyway, if you’ve missed any, you better look now, because they’re coming downnnnnnnn
YOU ARE SUCH A SHIT!!!!!
I expected something like that from Mac, but not from you…lol.
So, you noticed! LOL. You didn’t think that I’d let that go without a bit of fun, did you? Sorry, dear, but I’ve already read all of your posts, since I’ve been along for the ride from the beginning. LOL! Now, you’ve got some catching up to do, Missy!
Point me in the direction of non-geeky posts, and I just might
Heh. I’ve made it easy for you! Read the categories, except for the ones that look geeky
“Geeky run now”…lol
Thanks. I forget about categories because I don’t get ‘m over at blogger
Sounds like its time to graduate to Wordpress and gain a new headache!
Having a Sparc would have eliminated most (if not all) of the issues I had trying to load Solaris 10 this week. Granted another 256Mb of memory would help too.
I think I will have to make my way through the “geek” category.
This Ultra 5 is a bit too wimpy for Solaris 10. If it wasn’t, I’d perservere and try to get it on the box. But Solaris 8 is a bit long in the tooth for me (remember, this guy’s been playing with Reiser4 and Andrew Morton’s Linux kernels – can’t go back now!). I may still try, though, as the flash plugin is not set up for Sparc/Linux but you can use the Linux plugin on Solaris (go figure).
Maybe someone will drop a Blade on me with 600mhz+ processor and a gig of Ram…
