Haven’t been posting much lately, as I’ve been busy reloading my computer after installing a freeware game that borked the entire system. Thankfully, I dual-boot most of the time with a superior operating system to Windows (sorry, Bill, but your baby didn’t grow up yet) and I could access my files from the other operating system. Windows wouldn’t even reinstall without a full format, as some nasty .dll file installed by that game was trying to access a part of the hardware wrong, causing a super crash.
At least it gave me something to write about for a minute!
Hey, Corey, I just got my tax refund back and I am planning on getting a new system. I am leaning toward a $933.00 model though it is kind of expensive! (I was hoping for $720 or less which was my tax refund..haha) Since you are the hardware expert I could really use some advice about Linux Friendly hardware!
These are my specs so far:
* AMD Athlon 64 3500 (CPU)
* ASUS A8V PCI-E (Motherboard)
* 1024MB PC400 (Memory)
* 250 GB 7200 (Hard Drive)
* 16X DVD -RW DL (CDRom)
* 1.44 MB Floppy
* Standard 480W (Computer Case)
* NVidia 6600GT PCIE 128MB (3D Video Card)
Now Since I know that the PCI-E video card works in Linux I can be rest assured that all PCI Express devices are supported in the new linux kernels? Is that a correct assumption?
I must say I was very hesitant about going in the 64 bit direction but looking at the AMD 64 Wiki site it claims that this chip is a superset of the x86 archeticture which is NOT the case with Intels 64 bit chip. It claims that it runs in two modes - “long” mode and “legacy” and that all legacy 32 bit operating systems should run transparently on this 64 bit chip. The 64 bit problems only come when I install the experimental 64 bit kernels if I am reading everything correctly!
Hope you can help me out here my friend! I would give you a call but you are always at work when I am at home since you work during the nights and I work during the days! Take care and I hope to hear from you!
I’ve got a better idea Devin.
Pass all that cash to me.
What took you so long to respond. LOL!
Upgrade with me John! We will build a computer network….to rule the world! Or at least our own backyards.
I would like a new Nvidea card.
What are your current specs, John?
Find out here.
I have a Vaio that has all of that and more but of course it has a Pentium rather than an Athlon with a video card and a cd-rom and a dual layer dvd writer and a tv card that I paid 900 bucks for. I’d find some place else to shop.
Diane, CDN vs. US $$. I find that the prices un US$ is a lot lower when it comes to PC stuff. But when put into CDN$ they actually balance out, even though the CDN price is higher.
