I did say something about a writeup of my Gentoo installation experience.  Well, I’ve been too busy/too lazy to do it yet, but bear with me.  There were a few interesting snags, especially involving upgrading GCC (prick up yer ears, D? ;) ), that I feel need to be on the net so others can get through it more smoothly than I did.

I’ve installed the broken-out KDE ebuilds of 3.5, sort of.  Gentoo has a build instruction called kdebase-startkde, that installs a basic KDE.   I required only 22MB  of packages to get it (better than the 200 for a full blown version).  Now, to see if its better than 3.4 and to see if prelink makes a difference.

Writeup soon.  Promise.
